About
353,000 Greeks from Asia Minor were exterminated the period 1916-1923. Turkish
genocide of Pontian, looting, the burning of villages, hangings and
deportations that followed, succeeded in altering the ethnological character of
Greek regions. More than 400,000 displaced people arrived in caravan in
metropolitan Greece leaving behind a culture aged three millennia and ancestral
lands, churches, tombs and schools. They began a struggle for survival while
trying to maintain the Pontic culture, music, language, traditions and customs.
